Meet The Furry Farmhands

Leroy

Leroy may very well be the world’s most friendly and “chill” barn cat. He’s always hanging around rubbing up on a wall, or your leg or the dogs… that’s right, I said, dogs. He actually likes most dogs! He loves Banjo and Miss Dixie Pearl. He might even think he is a dog. He likes to run around with them, even though they pummel him, not understanding how much smaller he is than they are. He eats dog food and pretty much any other dog snack. He seems to just like being one of the pack. Leroy will snuggle up with most everyone and seems to have a keen sense for those who don’t generally like cats much. He seems determined to make you love him. He’s pretty worthless as a barn cat, since he spends most of his days lounging on the front porch in a sunny spot, watching the bird feeders, leaving the moussing up to his baby sister, Lucille, but we keep him around anyway b/c he’s so darn cute and sweet!

Likes: Pretending he’s a dog
Dislikes: When he is not the first one fed every evening in the barn

Lucille

“Luci” is a very shy girl, almost suspicious of most humans she meets, but she is an absolutely incredible barn cat. Luci is superbly gifted with keeping our barn critter-free. We’ve seen her stalking around at night carrying 3 mice in her mouth at once! She’s a hard worker (unlike her “chill” aka “lazy” brother, Leroy). She’s constantly scampering throughout the fields, and up the trees and across the fence lines in hot pursuit of something. She will come visit us, albeit briefly, either at dinnertime in the barn or when we’re out in the paddocks. She loves a good under chin scratch and will allow a pet or two before she must take off again for her next adventure.

Likes: Catching mice and birds and other random vermin
Dislikes: Being picked up and carried around like a baby

Banjo

Banjo is our first “born”, our first pet we got together as husband and wife and he is sufficiently spoiled as such. Banjo, much like Leroy the barn cat, was always a pretty “chill” pup. He gets along with everyone, is always smiling (a Samoyed trait by nature), and generally has a very loving and sweet demeanor. We learned quickly though, he needed to play… A LOT… and it was very annoying to Banjo when we had other things we needed to do besides play with him. So, soon enough, we were on the hunt for a little playmate for him and boy, did we ever get the most perfect playmate!! As soon as Miss Dixie Pearl joined the family, he was such a doting big brother. He was so very gentle and patient with her (and shockingly, still is). Banjo let’s “Pearl” be “the boss” about pretty much everything… except HIS alpacas. Banjo is protective of the alpacas and seems to feel a sense of ownership, like they are HIS herd. He can get “barky” sometimes if the sires are fighting or if you fuss with the alpacas too much. He is a fantastic watchdog and will alert us when any of the alpacas are alarming or in distress at night.

Likes: Being “the right hand pup” around the farm
Dislikes: When anyone (alpacas, llamas or humans) fights

Miss Dixie Pearl

Clearly just from the name, you know this girl is one sassy puppy! “Pearl” is a very confident and fun-loving dog. She came into this family as a high-energy dynamo and she hasn’t slowed down one tiny bit! She has a ton of energy and can run full force playing non-stop for hours. She has the sweetest smiley Samoyed face that no matter what she’s done (she can be quite destructive at times), you can never get mad at her adorable little face! She’s a loyal companion to both Banjo and her humans; always at our sides. Pearl loves being a farm dog! She loves playing in dirt and hay and water. She tries really hard to be helpful by pulling flakes of hay out of the bales and dragging them into the yard. She also loves assisting in clean up at the end of each night in the barn—while we sweep the floor, she barks and lunges at the broom and then she likes to run and jump right into the middle of the pile of hay when we’re done. You just have to laugh at her antics! She is so silly and delighted with herself; you can’t help but giggle at her. Once she gets her wild energy out, she enjoys lying on the hillside, chewing a bone and watching over the alpacas as they wander out across the paddocks during sunset.

Likes: Giving kisses and hugs and eating all sorts of berries
Dislikes: When no one will play with her
